Metso Outotec (Metso) is an international corporation, leading the way in sustainable technologies, by providing end-to-end solutions for the mineral processing, aggregates, and metals refining industry worldwide. They provide thoughtful solutions that reduce the consumption of energy and water by increasing process efficiency, recycling, and reprocessing of tailings and waste. When they needed to relocate their testing laboratory and warehouse facility, they reached out to Keystruct because of our previous work renovating their office facility.
Originally contracted in 2020 to renovate three stories of a fully occupied office building, Keystruct developed a complex phasing plan to prevent impacts to the productivity of the Metso staff. Material movement through windows on the upper floors, via a lift located outside the building, kept the construction activity confined and away from the staff working inside. To prevent delays from long lead items, materials were ordered early, then coordinated deliveries were arranged. Specialty finishes, custom glass panels, unique accent wall colors, and high-end ceilings, flooring, cabinets, and counter-tops delivered a modern, fresh workspace. This project was recognized with a Merit Award by ABC Keystone in 2021.
The Metso testing lab finds economical and environmentally friendly ways to process aggregates and ores from various samples around the world. The lab functions as a mini mine, so the space needed to accommodate all of the equipment that you would find at a mining operation, including crushers, rock cleaners, and substrate / ore separators.
The completed facility features office support spaces where the knock-out panels were removed and windows were installed to allow natural light into the interior. The laboratory and warehouse accommodate equipment to determine the most effective processes to extract the finished ores and aggregates from dirt and rock samples from around the world. The reports issued by this lab include energy expenditures for processing, aggregate sizes, and by-products produced.

Delays in obtaining permits and supply chain issues threatened to derail this project’s schedule early in construction. Strategic planning and effective communication allowed the project to be completed within the strict timeframe required by Metso. Working around existing equipment for the placement of the system infrastructure necessitated coordination and a logistical schedule for the M/E/P subtrades kept this project moving smoothly. This project received an Excellence in Construction Award from ABC Keystone at the awards banquet in 2022.
Currently, Keystruct is completing a new project within the Metso testing laboratory to keep the facility operating at maximum efficiency. Our team is finishing the installation of additional trench drains, one 75-ft section and one 41-ft section. The project includes the installation of a new sump pit that ties to both of the new sections. The flow from the 41-ft section feeds entirely into the new sump pump, while the 75-ft section has a high point at the center to allow half the flow to run to the existing sump pump and half to feed into the new pump.
Because this testing laboratory is only one of four in North America that does this type of work, it is imperative that it features the most modern systems and equipment. Additionally, strict construction schedules are required to minimize impacts to the functionality in the test facility. Planning, communication, and coordination to make sure all of the project deadlines are met, and our ability to customize solutions that meet project challenges keep this important customer happy, and returning to Keystruct for our expertise in construction services.
